No matter type of skin we have, we all experience dark, dry, or cracked spots on our elbows from time to time. The factors that cause this issue range from dehydration to eating disorders, to the simple accumulation of cellular debris and dirt.

But what can we do when rehydrating and/or using body lotions are not sufficient to make these "elbow patches" disappear. Well, we can resort to using simple home remedies, which will help us not only eliminate thickening and rough elbow skin, but will also erase any unsightly dark spots.

There are several natural remedies that you can use to eliminate the problem of dry and dark spots on the elbows:

  • Diet: The first, most important remedy for combating this problem to stay hydrated and eating healthy foods (with plenty of fruit and vegetables) which will ensure the necessary vitamin intake (especially vitamin A).
  • Calendula: Calendula is known for its calming and soothing properties, but is also an antibacterial and has healing properties. The use of calendula-based ointments can therefore help ensure the right level of hydration in our skin and promotes healing of small skin lesions.
  • Lemons: Lemons are also well known for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, as well as being often used as a skin lightener. Apply the juice of a lemon to darkened elbows, rubbing a slice directly on the area or mixing it with a neutral detergent, and leave it on for a few minutes. Remember to moisturize the treated area after rinsing off.
  • Bicarbonate (baking soda): The most popular natural whitener, you can apply baking soda weekly to your elbows, mixing it with water and salt to ensure an exfoliating action.
  • Coconut oil: Rich in saturated fatty acids, coconut oil is very nourishing and its antioxidant properties help to protect the skins from dryness, thickening and discoloring. This remedy can also be used on your heels.
  • Cucumber: If your skin is very delicate or has lesions, you can apply a slice of cucumber to it, which will allow you to get the desired results but with a more gentle approach.
  • Oatmeal: Mixed with water and salt into a thick paste, oatmeal is a perfect scrub to use on your elbows to make them smoother by eliminating impurities and dead cells.
