To complete the furnishing of any room, there are always some must-have accessories, such as light fittings which are crucial to create the right atmosphere. And you can make you own light fittings - at least the lampshades - using humble materials such as paper plates or plastic crockery.

How many times have you seen a great lampshade but not been able to afford it? Well, why not try replicating it using DIY?

You can find a thousand ideas online, and the ones we describe below are simple, cheap and require very little effort. In the one example, plastic bowls are used; in the other, regular paper plates. In just a few steps, you can have a lampshade that looks like you got it from some designer shop!

Looking at the DIY lampshade made by Camilla Bakken (@design_logg), you could be fooled into believing this is a designer item. Very simple geometric lines, neutral colors (in the video on social media, you can also see a matte black version), and a fashionable, large bulb. In short, this lampshape reflects current interior design trends. But as the creator jokes in the online videos, this lampshade is part of her "I can't afford to buy it, so I make it myself" series.

As you can see, two differently sized bowls were put together by their bottoms and then a hole was drilled through both of them for the electrical cord and light fitting. The result is very cute lampshade, suitable for any room in the home. Plus, with a coat of paint (best applied before assembling everything), you can customize the final product however you like!

These lampshades were featured in an EzyCraft video on YouTube and are reminiscent of Chinese paper lanterns! They are made with stacked pairs of paper plates with the centers cut out to allow for the electrical cord, fitting and bulb. The color of the plates determines the final result, and the online tutorial suggesst that very delicate pastel shades are the best choice in terms of providing optimal illumination.

Using a lampshade like this will create a soft and relaxing atmosphere in the living room. And you have the freedom to use all different sizes of plates, colors or creative combinations of these!
