10 suggestions to transform the under-stairs area into a fantastic, magical playroom

There are spaces in the home that are often neglected or used for mere storage, when instead, they could become a corner of wonders. One of these is the area under the staircase (aka the "spandrel"). Of course, we're talking about spandrels that are spacious enough to be furnished: perhaps there isn't space enough for a mini-room suitable for adults, but perhaps there is enough room for the kids.

So, with the right approach, a forgotten spandrel can come to life as a magical playroom, and perhaps help to keep the the kids' bedroom much tidier. Check out the ideas below to find out how many ways such a space can be set up:

These spaces (spandrels) are, generally, cramped and dark. The watchword, therefore, is illumination. And lighting will bring some cheer to the spandrel as well. Make these areas fun and enjoyable using bright colors, and bear in mind that sometimes, stripes of color can help make a space seem longer or wider, or higher!

Adhesive decorations for the walls, as well as the strings of light that frame the ceiling profiles, are great ideas that immediately makes the space feel more "homely".

A pouf, or a small armchair, perhaps a small table and some shelves for books: if the little ones like to read, the spandrel becomes a unique place to get lost in the pages of their favorite adventures.

It's easier to hang up many strings of lights than having to install proper light fittings, and the atmosphere will also feel more magical.

Here's an example on how to decorate the playroom for the little ones: use their favorite colors and cartoon characters (or other "TV heros").

And if the spandrel is wide enough, there will be room for a real room with a door - or even a door with a window!

And to further emphasize that this area is a world intended for children, you can decorate the outside of spandrel like a miniature house.

A sloping roof, a small window and even a light in the doorway!

Even if the staircase is arranged in such a way as to allow only a small spandrel, the kids' favorite games can still be stored away in it!

Mattresses or giant cushions on the floor: this will be a very comfortable refuge for the kids to play in - with their friends too!

Would you like to set up spandrel rooms like these under your staircase?
