Bread is a staple, daily food for many people in the world, and although everyone has their favorite type - and the recipes may change from country to country - bread remains a food that is always best when consumed while fresh. However, keep bread fresh not always easy. It really depends on the packages we keep it in.

It seems that the best way to store bread is to put it in the freezer. This is useful when you don't intend to consume the bread within a few days, or if you buy large stocks. But what other methods can help? Read on to find out:

  • The freezer: placing bread in the freezer when it is still fresh prevents it from becoming stale, and also eliminates the risk of mould developing. You can keep it in the freezer for up to three months, always after placing it in an container or wrapping from which as much air as possible has been eliminated. When you want to consume the bread, let it defrost in the oven. Some say that the optimal defrost temperature is 160°C for 20 minutes.
  • Cotton or linen bags: these are much better than plastic or paper bags, especially if the bread is to be eaten in a few days. Close the bag tightly with string and store at room temperature. Always remember to wash the bags at high temperatures in the washing machine.
  • Bread box: these are beautiful to look at and are designed specifically for storing bread. It is best to invest in a high quality box, which can recreate the ideal conditions that protect bread from excessive humidity. They are usually airtight, but they shouldn't be filled to bursting as this can cut air from circulating.
  • Plastic bags for the freezer: put the bread in plastic bags that close hermetically, removing as much air as possible before sealing. Stored like this, the bread should stay in good condition for at least a week.

The speed at which bread becomes stale or develops mold depends on many factors, starting from the type of bread itself and the atmospheric conditions in the house. But experimenting with these methods will surely help you find out what works best for you!
