In this article, we are focusing on the shed that is typically used to store tools (tool shed), but these sheds can be so much more: the so-called "garden shed or tool shed" is not only a storage room used outdoors, but can be a real asset that can even be used as a mini living room (or, in any case, can be transformed into a proper workstation when we are taking care of all the chores we need to do to take care of our garden).

So, if a prefabricated or hand-built shed is large enough to accommodate only a few tools, to make it into a larger and more beautiful structure, it will be necessary to spend a little more time on it's design plans. It is therefore useful to lay out these plans very well, and by following some useful tips - like the ones we provide below:

Check the local rules and regulations: if you want to build a large shed, which essentially becomes a small house, it is always good to make sure you can legally do this. Check what the legal constraints are on things like the maximum dimensions allowed for a garden / tool shed. Although they are not structures used for residential purposes, there may be constraints or limitations of various kinds to be taken into consideration.

The look and feel: an online search on sites like ours - but also on Pinterest or Instagram - will give you a thousand ideas, each one more beautiful than the next. Do not think that it must necessarily look like a rustic, weathered wooden shed. You can really unleash your imagination and maybe go for a super original or ultra-modern look! For each of those that gets onto your shortlist, however, you need to consider whether it truly blends in with the look and feel of the rest of the garden. This is an even more important consideration when the shed is close to your home - it needs to blend in with this too.

All of these consideration is why it becomes essential to understand what you want to do with your shed: if it will be just a storage area, you can place it where it is not visible. But if you want to use it as a place to take do various garden jobs (like repotting plants), or  if you want to create a structure to relax in, then it will have to be placed at a spot in the garden which is sheltered from too much exposure to sunlight in summer or from the icy winds during winter. So, carefully consider what its purpose will be and about the suitable position / spot to place in at.

Once you have identified the area of the garden to host your garden shed, take a good look around from this spot: are there any obstacles that could hinder its construction or use? Have you considered, for example, adding any flower beds near to where it will be? What impact will the shed have on this plan? Evaluate the overall situation and context as best as possible and make any necessary changes first, such as the pruning of trees /branches, moving of flowerbeds, etc.

Now that you have a clear idea of the overall plan, you can move on to considering how best to equip your shelter with everything you need: explore the internet to get a good idea on how to equip a shed with the best space-saving and organization systems, think about adding shelves or external cabinets if necessary. In short, try to think about everything that will you need to make the shed a practical, but also beautiful, location to relax (or work) in.

If you plan it properly, it will become your favorite spot in the garden!
