Color catcher sheets for the washing machine are a great invention... and you can make them yourself at home! Few things are more frustrating than discovering that dye has run during a wash. And doing extra washes to ensure color separation is tiring and expensive.

Fortunately, there are color catcher sheets that can help us in this regard. And if you use them often, you can also consider making your own - it's easier than you might think.

What do you need to make color catcher sheets at home?

Firstly, get hold of some white fabric: cotton is good, but it seems that felt is an even better for this. Alternatively, use an old white sheet or old white towel that you no longer use. The important thing is that the fabric chosen is white.

You will then need some sodium carbonate (aka laundry soda), a basin and some hot water. Lastly, you will need scissors to cut up the fabric.

The procedure is very simple:

  • Cut the fabric into rectangles or squares in the size of the sheets you normally purchase;
  • Fill the basin halfway with hot water;
  • Pour in a couple of tablespoons of the laundry soda;
  • Immerse the scraps of fabric in the mixture, soaking them;
  • After 10 minutes, squeeze out each sheet out by hand;
  • Let them air dry seperately on the washing line.

As for using them, do as you normally do for commercially-bought sheets. And if they don't get too stained, they can be reused in the future.

If you want to perfume your laudry, you can also add a drop or two of essential oil to them too!
