Whether they are soft, warm sweaters, wool scarves, cotton sheets or terry towels, when we wash our laundry, we want our garments to stay soft. If we do not use the right washing techniques, however, it could happen that our garments lose their softness and become rough to the touch.

It can also happen that we use an incorrect quantity or type of detergent that cause a loss of softness. In fact, the wrong or excessive amount of fabric softener can stick to the fabrics, preventing the detergent from removing stains and hardening them. So how can we ensure that our laundry remains as soft as possible?

There are some natural products that help us with this purpose, and we list them below:

The two main products used as fabric softener substitutes are vinegar and baking soda.

  • White alcohol vinegar is the most widely used product: just put 100 ml directly into the fabric softener compartment for a soft and fragrant laundry;
  • Sodium bicarbonate is also a very effective substitute for fabric softener and can be used directly in the washing machine's drum; pour a spoonful into the drum before closing the door and your clothes will come out of the wash feeling very soft.

These two ingredients can also be used in combination with natural glycerin: mix 200 ml of water with 200 ml of white vinegar or 200 grams of bicarbonate. Then add 2 tablespoons of natural glycerin and use 100 ml of this solution in the fabric softener tray.

There are many natural remedies that can make your laundry softer:

  • Citric acid is a perfect additive for your laundry: dissolve 150 grams in 1 liter of water (preferably distilled), and use 100 ml of this solution directly in the fabric softener tray. Your laundry will also be pleasantly scented if you add 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice;
  • Laundry soap nuts are an ecological and economical additive for your washing machine, which will not only replace regular detergent, but will also eliminate the need for a fabric softener. Place 4 or 5 soap nuts inside a cotton bag and place it in the drum together with the laundry;
  • Finally, if you have a dryer, soften your laundry by adding wool or bamboo dryer balls.
