We are surrounded by items made up of, at least in part if not all, of copper: pipes, electrical and telephone cables, pots, containers, mugs, kitchen utensils, jewellery, coins and even some ornaments are all examples of products that contain copper.

The disadvantage of this material is how easily it oxidizes (which happens when it comes into contact with air and water) and becomes tarnished. There are various very effective chemical products for cleaning copper on the market, but there are also equally effective natural alternatives we can use.

Below we explain how to get rid of the tarnish from your copper objects using natural and environmentally-friendly resources.

There are many natural ways to clean tarnished copper, some of which are the following:

  • Among the most effective techniques, there is the use of a mixture of white vinegar and salt, applied with a non-abrasive sponge; use 10-15 cl of vinegar and 2-3 teaspoons of salt and mix.
  • Another very effective remedy is to make a cleaner using bicarbonate and lemon, which is prepared by mixing two tablespoons of bicarbonate with the juice of a lemon and rubbing this on the copper object with the help of a damp non-abrasive sponge.
  • A much quicker solution is to rub the object to be cleaned with half a lemon, possibly covered with a pinch of salt for a more effectivee action, which will make it shine in an instant.

Toothpaste is not only useful for oral hygiene: apply a small amount on the tarnished copper and rub gently with a toothbrush, then rinse off thoroughly. The surface will be as good as new again.

Ketchup is also an unusual but very effective remedy for removing tarnish: apply it with a clean rag, rubbing carefully and you will see how your object will shine again. This unusual use of this sauce is effective due to the presence of vinegar as an ingredient.

Finally, you can finish your cleaning by carefully polishing your objects with the help of some olive oil: apply a few drops on a cloth and rub over the entire surface. Alternatively, prepare a paste with a teaspoon of flour, one of salt and one of white vinegar.

With the help of these remedies your copper objects will gleam again!
