Geckos are harmless reptiles that are widespread in cities, but many of us would prefer to keep them away from our homes. Similar to lizards, these reptiles are about 20 centimeters long, and legs equipped with pads allow them to climb walls and ceilings; their skin is usually spotted, gray and beige. Some tropical species have brighter colors, while only a few specimens change color to blend into the environment.

Geckos are not dangerous animals and have the considerable advantage of cleaning up the area in which they live from pesky insects such as flies and mosquitoes; in the past, moreover, their ability to regenerate their tails was seen as a symbol of rebirth, which is why they were considered good luck charms. Their proliferation, however, is very rapid and frequent: females lay 2 or 3 eggs at a time, which hatch in 1 to 2 months.

How then to keep them out of our apartments naturally? We reveal 6 useful techniques below.

If you do not like the presence of geckos in your home, you can resort to a few simple solutions:

  • seal cracks and crevices: geckos usually use cracks in walls, doors, and windows as hiding places and for laying eggs. Therefore, be sure to seal them thoroughly to prevent them from entering your home;
  • Cleanliness: geckos are attracted to the presence of the insects they feed on, which is why thorough cleaning that eliminates flies, spiders, and mosquitoes will deter them from entering your home. Timely removal of food scraps and installation of mosquito nets on windows will also help in this regard.
  • Eggshells: their sulfur smell is unwelcome to geckos because it reminds them of the birds that are their natural predators. Sulfur also creates an unpleasant burning sensation on their abdomen. Therefore, arrange some shells in places usually frequented by geckos, replacing them every 3 weeks. They will disappear quickly.
  • Garlic and shallots: in the same way as the shells, these two flavorings also give off an odor that is undesirable to geckos. Chop them up and place them near the entry points to keep them away.
  • Vinegar, lemon and chili pepper: you can create a spray by diluting these 3 ingredients in a spray bottle with a little water; you will create a mixture whose odor is undesirable to geckos. The chili pepper is also a skin and eye irritant for them. Spray it in areas usually frequented by geckos.
  • Citronella: This plant, with its strong, pungent odor, is able to ward off not only insects but also geckos. You can use it in a spray, burn a candle or incense, or get the plant yourself.
