Garden furniture made with resin: clean and revive them to near-new condition easily

Chairs for eating outdoors, a lounger for lying down in the sun in the privacy of home, or perhaps a rocking chair for relaxing in the garden or on the balcony during the summer: there are many furniture items made (or containing) resin that are used to furnish our outdoors, and in most cases, they are colored white.

The resin used for to make this furniture is designed to resist bad weather. But even given this, it is still advisable to shelter or protect them from exposure to harsh weather conditions. Not to mention all dust, pollen, mud and other forms of dirt can harm them. Over time, the finish of resin-based furniture will tarnish and get dirty, but fortunately there are several ways to make the furniture pieces look like new again.

If they are only superficially dirty, you can limit yourself to washing the furniture using a standard method, as follows:

  • A basin of hot water with a little dishwashing liquid, to be wiped on with a soft sponge. This will be enough to dissolve the bulk of the dirt, and then you can rinse it off with the hose.
  • Alternatively, instead of dishwashing liquid, you can use Marseille soap, and in both cases, the mixture can be put in a handy spray bottle.

To remove more stubborn dirt:

  • Add a little baking soda to the sponge or cloth, which will act as an abrasive, but without being too aggressive.
  • Similarly, you can use citric acid.

In more serious cases, proceed as follows:

  • Use a fine steel wool sponge to scrub away the stains from the surfaces.
  • Alternatively, use bleach - always wearing gloves - diluted in hot water and an abrasive sponge (or fine steel wool).
  • Heat the surfaces using a blowtorch, passing it over quickly and not too close to the surface: this will mildly melt the surfaces and restore them. But be careful not to linger on any point for too long, otherwise you risk permanently damaging the piece of furniture.

In the first two cases, this treatment will remove the protective coating. In this case, it is highly recommended that you also restore this protective layer with the right product.
