The arrival of spring and summer inevitably brings the desire to open shutters, doors and windows and roll up your sleeves to clean away the dust of winter. Involving all parts of our homes, spring cleaning should also include the shutters - but we may not know how to do this properly.

Being externally mounted, shutters are constantly exposed to atmospheric agents: sun, rain, wind, snow, hail and frost can ruin them over time and cleaning them with chemical products could damage them even further. Fortunately, our pantries are full of products that can help us out with this.

Let's find out today how to clean the shutters and blinds in a few minutes and without using chemical cleaners.

There are a few simple steps that will allow you to return your shutters to good condition using ingredients that can easily be found in the pantry:

  • The first thing to do is remove all the dust which has accumulated over time. And to do this, use a broom with stiff bristles. If your shutters are made of wood, use a soft bristled brush instead. Take care to get into all the nooks and crannies and during this operation, protect yourself with rubber gloves and masks.
  • Once the dust has been removed, you can proceed with washing the shutters by preparing a bucket of warm water and a clean cloth.

For this phase, you can use various natural remedies, depending on the material your shutters are made of.  Wooden shutters, for example, need a more delicate treatment than other materials. We list below these natural remedies that you can find in your pantry:

  • Vinegar is perfect for removing stains and sanitizing and is suitable for all materials. All you need to do is dilute a glass of it in a bucket of water and pass it over the entire surface with a cloth. To reach all areas of the shutter, you can use a toothbrush or put the cloth on the handle of a wooden spoon (or similar).
  • Marseille soap - being more delicate - is ideal for your wooden shutters. Dilute a small amount in the bucket of water.
  • Yellow soap or a few drops of dishwashing liquid can effectively remove stains and limescale.
  • If you prefer very natural solutions, pour a glass of lemon juice into the water.
  • Two tablespoons of baking soda will allow you to not only to remove stains, but also to sanitize the surfaces.
  • Finally, aluminum shutters can also be cleaned effectively with steam.

At the end of this operation and if your shutters are made of wood, we advise you to treat them with a protecting, barrier oil.

All you have to do now is choose your favorite remedy and get cracking!
