Wearing warm and colorful wool sweaters - let's admit it - is one of the pleasures of winter. They are comfortable and, more often than not, incredibly beautiful.

Sometimes, however, they can be get smelly or not be very soft. Or they develop pilling over time and due to washing. As a result, sweaters can become uncomfortable to wear.

There are, however, various remedies useful for solving these problems and which will restore the softness and elasticity to the fibers of our woolen garments. Here are some solutions below:

  • Commercial fabric softener: the first thing that comes to mind when considering restoring softness to woolen garments is fabric softener. This is a chemical product that can help and provides a great scent as well. Fabric softener is used more often in the washing machine, but when dealing with wool sweaters, it is always advisable to avoid washing them in the washing machine - hand washing is much better.  Leave the garment to soak in cold water and fabric softener overnight. The following morning, rinse out and spread out flat to avoid distorting the shape of the sweater.
  • Baking Soda: A great natural alternative to fabric softener is baking soda. Just mix it with cold water (for the right dosage, use about four tablespoons for every liter of water) in a bowl and put the wool sweater into the water to soak overnight. After this, you can wash the sweater with Marseille soap (which further helps to soften and perfume). Then, rinse out and spread flat to dry.
  • DIY fabric softener: to make a natural fabric softener, try mixing half a liter of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, a cup of baking soda and a few drops of an essential oil you like in a liter of water. You can use the mixture obtained just like a commercial fabric softener. Leave the sweater in the mix overnight and then rinse out and dry flat. If the sweater is very dirty, you can wash it with Marseille soap before it dries.
  • Milk: a grandmother's remedy to restore softness to woolen garments involves the use of milk. Just put the woolen garments for a couple of hours in milk and water and then wash and rinse out. The ideal dose is one part milk to three parts water. And it seems that in this task - as for skin care routines - milk can be a precious ally.
