Cleaning makeup brushes: two different methods compared

Whether you wear makeup very often or rarely, you probably use different makeup brushes to do this. With each use, the bristles of these brushes get covered with various powders and creams and they come into contact with the skin. As a result,  the bristles pick up sebum and residue of the beauty products used - and all this materials remains on the brushes. For this reason, makeup brushes should be cleaned after each use - or at least once a week - to ensure good hygiene and to always have a healthy skin.

How can we do this effectively? There are several methods that are recommended and specific products that can be purchased in shops. But what about DIY solutions? A TikTokker compared two different techniques and you can find out more by reading further:

On her TikTok account (@cleaningwithgabie), the young woman has posted a video where she proposes the use of a mix of dish soap and vinegar to clean makeup brushes. And then she compares this to one of her personal remedies, made with water and some of her face soap. Here are the two methods compared:

  • The first method: fill a glass with two fingers of white vinegar (apple vinegar is fine), and then add a few drops of dishwashing liquid (not too much). She then takes a dirty makeup brush and dips it into the liquid, swivelling it vigorously so that the bristles are thoroughly washed. Then she rinses the brush off under running water (repeated until the water runs clear).
  • The second method: fill a glass cup with two fingers of water and add a small amount of facial cleanser (in the video, the girl uses a gel/foam cleanser). Then proceed as in the first method.

Judging by the results shared in the clip - which you can see here - the dish soap and vinegar mix seems to be the more effective method. However, it must be remembers that in the long run, vinegar could damage the synthetic bristles of your brushes.

What's your favorite method to clean your makeup brushes?
