Not everyone uses the same methods and the same products to deodorize and perfume their home environments. Few people know, however, that an optimal way to deodorize the home is to put the deodorizer or perfume on the curtains.

Curtains are typically made of lightweight materials that easily absorb odors, both pleasant and unpleasant. It is for this reason that it is best to wash them often to eliminate all the bad smells which are absorbed daily.

And it is for the same reasons that scenting them will, in turn, make them a very effective air freshener. Here is how to do this:

For a curtain to act as an air freshener, start by washing it first.

Normally, curtains can be washed in the washing machine. However, we advise against using classic washing products. Try using baking soda and Castile soap instead. Put the baking soda in the drum, together with the curtain, and the soap in the detergent drawer. Obviously, the soap must be in liquid or flake form. The advantage of using Castile soap is get a completely fresh and natural fragrance (unlike standard, commercial detergents).

To enhance the effect of the Castile soap, you can use essential oils. These oils can be used during washing or after washing.

  • During the wash: if you want to put essential oil in the washing machine during the wash cycle, you can put a few drops directly into the drum; alternatively, you can make a mixture of water, essential oil and baking soda, to be sprayed first on the curtain. In the latter case, you need to do a pre-wash to ensure that the oil penetrates the fibers of the curtain. Spray the mixture abundantly on the dry curtain, leave it for 1 or 2 hours and then put it in the washing machine and proceed with a regular wash.
  • After washing: if, on the other hand, you want the scent from the curtains to be more intense and persistent, you can spray the same mixture on a clean curtain, taking care to spray the entire surface. In this way, the perfume will dry on the curtain and spread throughout the home.

In both cases, it is advisable that you hang up the washed curtain while it is still wet - this will help eliminate any creases. As for the scented oil, feel free to use whatever one you like best. The most popular oils are citrus or lavender - but the range of choices is huge.

So, what are you waiting for? Get going perfuming your home!
