The bed mattress is one of the objects in the home that we spend the most time on, and which needs constant cleaning. It is estimated, in fact, that the average person spends a third of their life sleeping - so we definitely leave a mark on our mattresses (even if not visible).

Even when they are protected by covers, mattresses are a paradise for dust mites and bacteria that live off our bodies' waste (sweat, fluids, hair, dead skin, etc) and do not contribute to our well-being at all.

There are cases where sweat stains or other marks are clearly visible and push us to look cleaning solutions, but even when this cleaning is done, it does not mean that the mattress is actually clean. In fact, it is necessary to periodically use a vacuum cleaner on the mattress (and the more powerful the appliance, the better).

A lady on TikTok - after seeing many videos on the platform where people preached about the need to vacuum a mattress, decided to do it herself. She was shocked by the amount of dirt extracted by the vacuum from a seemingly clean mattress.

This is the tale of @cleanhappyco, who in her video shows us how she equipped herself with a powerful vacuum cleaner, with a perfectly clean tank, and started to pass the nozzle over the entire surface of her mattress with long regular strokes. Looking at the pictures, she initially thinks that the mattress did not seem to be particularly dirty.

Despite this, the amount of dust, dead skin and dirt sucked up and collected in the tank of the device was quite remarkable in the end. Click here to watch the video.

How often should the mattresses be vacuumed?

Ideally, once a week, before putting on a set of new sheets, is a good time to vacuum. But even doing it twice a month is fine. More rarely (but not less than a couple of times a year, with the changing of the seasons), it is also advisable to sprinkle the mattress with a layer of baking soda, and vacuum everything up after leaving it to act for at least half an hour.

Also pay attention to the type of mattress you have: there are some that have one side for winter and one for summer, and others that should be turned 180° twice a year. In other cases, however, it is advisable to rotate them from head to toe.
