White T-shirts and regular shirts are perfect garments for the summer but they tend to get stained and turn yellow easily. It goes without saying that, to keep them as new and as white as possible, it is useful to wash them in a specific way, to remove stains immediately as soon as they get dirty (because treating the fresh stain is easier and more effective), and not to keep them too long hanging in the sun.

Once the damage is done, however, if you find yourself with a yellowed or stained shirt, you can still do something about it. From natural remedies, to those that use bleach, there are numerous ways to turn a garment gleaming white again. We show some of these below:

Before treating a white t-shirt or regular shirt, you need to make sure there are no hardened stains and, if there are, to remove them. To do this, you have at least three ingredients you can use: baking soda, toothpaste and dishwashing liquid.

In all three case,s you can apply the product directly onto the stain to be treated, leave it to act for some time and then try to remove the dirt by scrubbing it with an old toothbrush.

Afterwards, wash everything in the washing machine. In the case of using baking soda, it is advisable to mix it with water to obtain a paste that, when applied to the garment and left to act, will give you excellent results.

Once you get rid of the stains, your new mission is to eliminate any annoying yellowing. For this, other ingredients - natural and otherwise - can become your allies. These include white vinegar, lemon, baking soda and bleach.

  • As for white vinegar, dilute half a glass in a basin of water and put the item to be treated in it, leaving it to act for a few hours. After the necessary time, proceed with a regular washing. Vinegar seems to have the property of reviving and restoring brightness to colors and this also applies to white garments.
  • Lemon: you can boil lemon in a pot full of water, then immerse the shirt to be treated for about an hour. After an hour, wash in the washing machine.
  • Returning to baking soda, you can mix it with washing machine detergent, diluting it in equal parts and proceeding with the regular wash. Again, the white of your garment should shine through.
  • If the yellowing is very stubborn and you have tried various natural remedies without good results, it will be necessary to use bleach, (which is certainly a less green and healthy remedy for us and the environment), but there is no doubt that it disinfects and whitens garments. Make sure you can use it on the clothing to be treated and that there are no interactions with other products that could be toxic. Dilute a little in a basin of water and leave it to soak for an hour. Then wash, normally, in the washing machine.

Among these remedies you will surely find one that best suits your needs and you can return to showing off your gleaming, white clothes.
