Leashes and harnesses: thoroughly cleaning them to remove all the dirt

Anyone who has a dog knows how happy they are to go on walks outside the home. And to do this, we need leashes and harnesses (which are better than collars, which can cause injury to the animal!). Leashes allow us to walk dogs without risks to themselves and to others.

If these walks are a daily or weekly habit, it takes very little for those accessories to get dirty, and you can also tell this by the color that the straps turn. In fact, within a few weeks, the straps lose their bright colors and become covered with a greyish patina, not to mention all the hair and other dirt. For a thorough cleaning, they can be soaked in some products that we can easily find at home.

As @lauzydan's account on TikTok shows, you can make a real "dirt soup": that's what this TikTokker calls it, and in fact, this is what the cleaning produces.

What is needed:

  • a basin
  • hot water
  • laundry soda or borax
  • active oxygen stain remover
  • an old ladle

Sometimes, laundry detergent is added to these "ingredients", and sometimes baking soda takes the place of one of the listed ingredients. However, always pay attention to which products can be mixed together!

The procedure is easy:

  • Fill the basin with water
  • Add the various ingredients to the water
  • Mix them well
  • Put the leashes and harnesses in the mixture
  • Let them soak for a few hours, or overnight.

You will notice that after an hour, the water will become dark and full of suspended dirt. The longer you wait, the more muddy it will become. And if you have not done a cleaning of the leashes and harnesses before (which is very probable for most of us), you could find yourself with a muddy soup-like liquid from the dirt!

Generally, after this type of cleaning - which is often referred to by the English term "stripping" - is followed by a washing in the washing machine. In the case of leashes - which are smaller - we advise you to do this only if they are really dirty, otherwise it would be a waste of resources. In most cases, it is sufficient to rinse everything thoroughly and let them dry.

Are you ready to find out what condition your furry friends' leashes are in?
