Paths, walkways and trails of all kinds are indispensable elements in any garden, no matter how big or small it is. Not only do they help us move around in this space, but they also add a visual feature that enhances the garden. Most times they are used to avoid us stepping on specific areas of the garden that need protection. In addition to this function, however, they also have a decorative purpose.

From an aesthetic point of view, in fact, they greatly affect the general appearance of the garden, and sometimes they are themselves a feature of real artistic value. They give a landscape a specific atmosphere, and for this reason, depending on the materials they are made from and designs they laid down in, they give life to many different looks. Check out some of these below:

Simple red bricks, and perhaps with a border that creates a nice color contrast, using concrete, for example. A simple, but effective idea.

It is also possible to place small walkways through the middle of a flower beds, perhaps using reclaimed wooden boards or planks, which should be treated to withstand wear and the weather.

A simple but beautiful combination is that of a gravel bed on which wooden boards have been laid. This feature is reminiscent of train tracks!

If you want to try something more pop-culture styled, consider colored paths: perhaps by simply painting regular bricks in all the colors of the rainbow.

Or, if you like creative recycling ideas, try using waste items like plastic caps!

There are also those who have used discarded kitchen countertops, such those made from granite!

These paths have been made with round pebbles and laid out like a mosaic. The pebbles have been chosen having similar size dimensions but in many different colors. This layout has an incredible charm, and allows one to "draw" patterns of all kinds on the ground.

Using your imagination, mosaics can also be created by combining materials of many different types: stones, broken bricks, concrete pieces, and more.

Artistically shaped slabs with abstract and sinuous forms: a truly elegant walkway.

Japanese garden steps always have a great charm: they can be made of wood, stone, concrete and be placed directly on top of the bare ground, gravel, in the middle of the lawn ... there are so many possibilities!

And how about creating a path using Japanese steps that crosses a "river" of pebbles, complete with a small bridge? A true dream!

Which idea do you like best?
