Air conditioner water: 4 ways to reuse it and avoid unnecessary waste

With air conditioners running almost continuously during the hottest times of the year, cooling and dehumidifying the air in our homes, there is always a certain amount of water that is expelled from the system. Generally, the apparatus mounted outside the home is equipped with a drain pipe that conveys the water to a drain. There are those who let this water run free onto the lawn or into a flower bed. Then there are those who have made a storage system and preserve the water in a container.

But what is done with the water which is collected in this way? It is, after all, purified water, devoid of all those substances that we find in regular tap water, and so, it can be useful in various useful ways.

First of all, it is a good idea to get a proper water collection tank, if possible. It can be placed underground or hidden from view, but it should be covered so that no insects or dirt ends up in the water. At a push, you can use buckets or tubs, to be checked regularly.

  • Watering: Connect the water collection tank to the balcony or garden irrigation system. If you have a flower bed at the foot of a slope to where the water flows, it's fine to just let the hose pour the water onto the ground - although it could still be a waste when the plants don't need watering too often (and could even cause root rot if too much water is used). Alternatively, you could empty the tank or bucket into watering cans to water your other plants and without consuming regular tap water.
  • Cleaning of external surfaces: Use this reclaimed water to clean windows, garden furniture and outdoor surfaces. This water is also fine for similar purposes, used from time to time with the appropriate products or detergents.
  • In-home cleaning: This water that can also be used to wash the floors of the house, just like you can outside. However, this water is a little less suitable for home hygiene, since it may still contain bacteria. It is therefore suitable for cleaning when products such as bleach are perhaps used with the water.
  • For fountains or ponds in the garden: If you have a water garden or some other water feature in your garden, you can also use the water from the air conditioners to replenish their sources.

How do you reuse the water from your air conditioners?
