When the garden or yard is a monotonous expanse of lawn or a single, uninterrupted paved area, it can feel a little empty and bland. However, even if there are already some trees, you can decide to add some more decorations that will bring a touch of liveliness and color to your outdoor spaces.

To do this, you can use flower beds which, just like a fashion accessories or a paintings on a wall, can give movement, energy and a personal touch to your garden. They can be created around trees or in the middle of a flat expanse, and they can be flat or raised: it all depends on your tastes, and below are some ideas to inspire you:

The simplest and most effective method is to surround the trunk of a tree with a circle of stones (or bricks) and fill the area demarcated with flowers and plants of your choice.

Generally, plants (often seasonal) are chosen that are compact, do not grow very high and only create localized areas of color. But even using small bushes that grow higher can be beautiful to behold.

A bench and some plants, even in pots: here is a very pleasant relaxation area at the foot of a tree.

Do you have many pots with small plants, perhaps a "nursery" with all your cuttings? Arrange them in the shade of a tree, close to each other and perhaps on a wooden platform. They will decorate your garden with panache until you have to move them or repot / plant them elsewhere.

Not just plants can be considered: covering the ground with pebbles / gravel and creating decorations on the ground is an idea to be experimented with.

Or perhaps combine both: a flowerbed designed with stones (white ones make a great impression!). The add some plants that will stand out against the mono-color background.

To break up the monotony of the expanse of lawn - even if you don't have any trees or shrubs present - you can build a rock garden: it's great for dry climates and adds an unexpected touch.

And if you look at the photos of the most famous horticultural exhibitions and competitions in the world (the Chelsea Flower Show is one of the best known), you will find some incredible creations that use flowers to "paint" shapes in various shades!

To demarcate the flower beds, both on the lawn and on a paved area, you can use many objects, including roof tiles!

And with roof tiles you can even create raised flower beds!

Lots of colorful layers: rather than a raised flowerbed, it makes you think of a colorful cake!
