Don't want weeds in the garden anymore? Discover these natural methods to eliminate them

The removal of weeds from the paved areas of the garden is generally done by means of herbicides (weedkillers): these are certainly the most effective, and give visible results almost immediately, but they are also often very harmful for the soil, to pets and to plants which are located in the treated area.

If you are looking for alternative and more environmentally friendly methods, you can take advantage of some green DIY remedies, which may require a little more patience and perseverance, but can really avoid doing any serious damage to the collateral areas. We describe some of these remedies below:

  • If you need to eliminate weeds from a small area, nothing is safer for the environment than boiling water, and it's also super easy to use. In fact, you only have to boil a large amount of water, and then take the pot / kettle out into the garden (handling it with suitable gloves so as not to burn yourself) and pour the boiling water directly onto the weeds. Beware of splashes and do not pour the boiling water too close to your feet or clothing to avoid burns. Plants killed by the boiling water will die in a few hours or days, and it will be possible to pull them out easily. The surrounding terrain, however, takes no damage.
  • If you want to intensify this remedy, you can add some table salt, as much as a cup, for a large pot of boiling water. This intervention is a lot more aggressive, so be careful to use it only where there are no other plants that could also be affected.
  • Soap, salt and vinegar: this is a topical treatment, therefore it is to be used directly on each plant. In a bottle of vinegar, add half a teaspoon of dish soap and 1.5 tablespoons of table salt, shake well and then pour into a spray bottle for convenience. Spray the product on the weeds during the sunniest hours of the day. Warning: it will not make them die outright, but over time, it will drastically reduce their growth, postponing the task of weeding the area for a longer period.

If you have cleared the weeds away and want to delay their reappearance as much as possible, you can use:

  • Special sands, of mineral origin and enriched with hydrophobic substances that make them water-repellent, and therefore capable of preventing the growth of new weeds. The sand should be placed in the gaps between the bricks of the ground or in the cracks of the asphalt / concrete, where the seeds of the weeds germinate and create a new crop.
  • Corn flour: the gluten contained within this product works as a herbicide and also keeps ants away. The best time to use this preventative remedy is in early spring.

Great job!
