Any plant we put in the house, in the garden or on the balcony helps us to make these spaces more hospitable and liveable, adding a touch of green that softens the surroundings and makes us want to spend more time in these places. We choose the plants according to the need: we chose them depending on if they have to decorate, shade, fill empty spots and more. And we select those that can really thrive in the space intended for them. But the vases, pots and planters in which to keep them also contribute to the overall visual impact and the models available are endless.

Apart from those commercially available, you can also make them with your own hands using concrete or wood, and also by recycling old objects. Get inspiration from the ideas below to construct your own DIY planters:

There are many simple models that can be made with concrete - perfect both in the garden and at home. And all of them can be customized with colored and even metallic paints.

Concrete planters and pots can be large or can be reduced in size to be suitable for smaller plants: with succulents you can create truly amazing compositions, and decorate your living spaces with great originality.

Wooden logs and tree trunks are another useful material DIY for planters: with a hole saw you excavate one side precisely, in order to create the space to be filled with soil (after drilling the drainage holes). This then becomes like any long vase, to be decorated with your favorite plants. Succulents, again, are very convenient for this because they require little water, so the wood will last longer and will not rot from over-watering.

And the same method works for hollowing out the center of the trunk, leaving just the bark clad outer.

There is no shortage of ideas for using recycled wood, or even pieces bought and cut specifically, to create very modern wall-mounted planters.

And how about using a thicker branch to make a very nice "cup" planter?

If you have a few old, large breakfast cups, or even mugs and old teacups, you can make them into pots for many types of plants, especially bulbs and succulents. And the ways to decorate them are endless.

Even pieces of very large (thick) bamboo canes make beautiful planters.

Glass bottles with an iconic shape, like those of certain famous perfumes, are beautiful as vases for cut flowers.

Decals, transfers, stickers, decoupage or freehand painting: food cans are always a very nice idea to recycle using plants.

Any sturdy plastic bucket or container, large enough for the designated plant, becomes a piece of furniture with just a little string and glue!
