Washing machine needs cleaning? Use these simple home remedies

Even if they work constantly with hot, soapy water, dirt still accumulates inside washing machines periodically. And when you don't keep them clean, the dirt is likely to generate mold and odors, which is not only unpleasant but can also be bad for your health.

Furthermore, limescale can form in these appliances, and that too must be eliminated to ensure continued, correct operation and extend the life of the appliance itself. To thoroughly clean a washing machine, you can use some simple methods at home, such as the ones we list below:

Vinegar and soda ash (laundry soda):

  • Laundry soda is a product often used in the formulation of many detergents that we typically use. It is capable of removing greasy dirt and sanitizing surfaces, as well as acting against limescale. Having some at home is therefore useful on many occasions, even for cleaning the washing machine. Laundry soda is more abrasive than baking soda, so use it sparingly. Pour a small handful into the drum, and run a short wash cycle at high temperature. If the water in the house is hard (so limescale also often forms), use half a liter of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sodium carbonate instead. As you may know, vinegar is also an excellent agent for degreasing dirt and fighting limescale. But be careful not to use it too often, as it can damage the rubber of the seals and this can lead to mechanical failure in the long run.
  • Vinegar can also be used to clean the detergent compartment: remove it from the housing and soak it in hot water and vinegar in equal parts in a small basin for about ten minutes. Scrub the dirt out of all the crevices with the help of an old toothbrush and then rinse thoroughly. Only replace the drawer when it is perfectly dry.
  • For the gaskets and washers (such as the door), wet a microfibre cloth with water and a little vinegar, and pass it into the ring, rubbing any stains or accumulations of detergent. In a similar way you can also use hydrogen peroxide.
  • Never forget to also check the condition of the filter - it is usually located in a lower corner on the front of the washing machine. In addition to cleaning it of all solid debris, you can keep it soaking for a while, just like with the detergent compartment, or maybe for a little longer. Always remember to put rags or old towels under the washing machine when you are about to open the filter housing, as usually a little water always spills out.

Weel done and great job!
