Sometimes it happens that we have to store iron objects for a long period of time and it is only after a long time that we take them out again. If we are lucky, and they have been well preserved, they will not show any signs of aging. If, on the other hand, the metal has come into contact with humidity or water, we will find a nasty surprise: rust!

Whether it's an ordinary tool, an old bike or a trinket from our grandparents or great-grandparents, if we don't want to throw away the object in question, the only way to do so is to eliminate the rust film. And just how do we do this? Together, let's look at 3 quick and easy methods to remove rust. Do you have vinegar, lemon, baking soda and potatoes at home? Fantastic, you are already well under way! These are exactly the ingredients needed for the three rust solutions that we recommend below:

1. White wine vinegar

The vinegar method is the simplest of all. All you need is a good amount of the product and a bowl. Immerse the rusty object in the container with the vinegar and let it act on the rust for at least 30 minutes. Once the necessary time has elapsed, take it out and scrub the surface with an old toothbrush. If, alternatively, you decide to use an aluminum steel wool pad, make sure that the tool is scratch resistant so that it does not get damaged. Then rinse off with fresh water. In case the object is too big to soak, you can spray the vinegar directly on the surface.

2. Baking soda and potatoes

If you don't have vinegar at home, don't worry - there is an alternative remedy. Potatoes and baking soda will also be helpful against rust. Take a potato and cut it in half. Sprinkle one of the two halves with baking soda and start rubbing it on the rusty part of the object. Contact with the acid of the potato will cause the rust to lift and detach from the surface. As an alternative to baking soda, you can use common kitchen salt. After scrubbing the rust for a while, wash the item thoroughly and store it in a dry place away from water and moisture.

3. Lemon juice

In this case, create a paste with lemon juice and baking soda. Also, and alternatively, you can decide to replace the latter ingredient with salt or borax. Whichever you choose, apply the paste to the rust-affected surface and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. If the rust is stubborn, the action time of the compound must necessarily be lengthened to obtain a good result (i.e. leave the paste on for 45 or 60 minutes).

Always make sure that the mixture of lemon and bicarbonate does not dry out too much. If it does, spray it with a little water to moisten it. Then brush the surface and remove any residue under running water. Your object will be like new and ready to use.

For each of these methods, remember that if the rust does not disappear immediately, you can repeat the procedure several times in order to permanently eliminate it.
