Separating waste helps the environment, but the trash can/bin holding the organic waste can be a challenge to keep clean and not smelling bad. Obviously, an organic waste bin must be emptied frequently and washed out to stay hygienic.

If, despite these precautions, your organic waste bin still gives off a bad smell, try the tips described below:

Most would say that the toilet is the dirtiest object in the home. Given this, toilet-cleaning products can also be used to deal with "smelly" organic waste bins.

Perhaps you are familiar with the gadget that places a blob of fragrently-smelling gel in/on the toilet (aka a gel stamp)? This deodorizing stamp adheres to the toilet wall and cannot be flushed away, counteracting any unpleasant odors. Well, this gadget can also be used for the organic waste bin.

Place the stamp on the underside of the bin's lid or on one of the vertical surfaces. If necessary, place two (or more) stamps in the bin.

When the time comes to wash out the organic waste bin, it is a good idea to take it outside to do this job properly. Failing that, wash it out in a large basin or in the sink.

After rinsing away the bulk of the grime, wet and wring out a cloth or sponge, pour two tablespoons of white vinegar and a drop of dishwashing liquid into the bin. Then, using the damp sponge, scrub out the inside of the bin thoroughly. Then rinse out and allow to dry.

You can also use citric acid. In this case, dissolve a spoonful of the citric acid in a spray bottle of warm water, add a drop of dishwashing liquid and shake well to mix. Now you have a DIY detergent to wash out your organic waste bin.

Other useful cleaning tips

Considering that fragile biodegradable bags are almost always used for the organic waste bin, it is best to empty out the waste often (and before the bags degrade and start to leak).

To prevent the bottom of the bins from getting dirty, you can line them with sheets of newspaper, onto which you can also sprinkle a little baking soda or dry coffee grounds (which serve as odor absorbers).
