Available in many different shapes, plastic containers are excellent utensils that allow us to store and transport our food, and are much more practical than their glass equivalents (which are often quite fragile and can easily chip or break). These containers are also often equipped with airtight seals, which allow food to be isolated, preventing the development of mold, germs and bacteria and guaranteeing better preservation.

The disadvantage of this type of container, however, is the ease in which they can be stained, apparently permanently. If the preservation of dry foods does not present any drawbacks, very greasy or fatty sauces and in the presence of acidic substances such as tomatoes or onions can stain the plastic.

Below, we describe a method to ensure your plastic containers stay clean.

To effectively remove stains from your plastic containers you will need water, a common dish washing detergent and some absorbent paper, kitchen paper or napkins.

The first thing to do is to immerse your containers in very hot water, adding a few drops of dish detergent. Then fill the container with absorbent paper or napkins cut into small pieces and close with the lid. Shake the container repeatedly, checking the condition of the stains. When you see that you have managed to remove them, open the container and rinse thoroughly with cold running water.

In case of particularly stubborn stains it will be necessary to repeat this operation several times.

There are also effective natural alternatives for removing stains from plastic containers:

  • hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate are among the whitening remedies par excellence and you can easily eliminate stains from your containers by preparing a thick paste with these two ingredients, spread over the surface of the container and leave to act for a few hours before rubbing off with a sponge or brush;
  • bicarbonate can also be used alone, diluting 4 tablespoons in a liter of water and leaving the container to soak;
  • finally, vinegar is also a very good alternative remedy: you can use it simply by rubbing it on the surface to be cleaned or by soaking the container in a solution made up of 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water.

With these tips, your plastic containers will be as good as new.
