Toothpaste to polish cutlery: in just a few minutes, you will be amazed

What would we do without cutlery? We use cutlery constantly, washing it daily. But now matter how careful we are, over time, cutlery will start to show its age. In general, fine cutlery is made from silver (or a silver alloy).

But silver, no matter how pure it is, will tarnish over time.

The smooth and shiny surface of silver cutlery comes from rhodium plating - a process which gives silver its unmistakeable appearance. But this mirrored, shiny surface is subject to oxidation which will make your silver cutlery become tarnished.

But this can be remedied. There are specific products for polishing silver, but these can be expensive. An alternative cleaner that is usually always at hand is toothpaste!

The important thing is to choose a toothpaste that does not have gel components, so pastes with an organic formulation are recommended. Use small quantities of toothpaste to rub on the cutlery with a soft cloth (microfibre or flannel), then rinse off with warm water and dry immediately with another cloth, dabbing gently.

Among the homemade alternatives to make your silver shine again, you can also use a mix of water and isopropyl alcohol, or white vinegar, again rubbing on with a soft cloth until you get the desired result.
