When you have free space problems, storing some objects under the bed becomes unavoidable. In fact, finding solutions like this becomes inevitable if you live in a small home.

But what's the best way to organize the space under the bed? Whether it's a classic bed or a container bed, this task is not as simple as it might seem; even if you can't see what's in it, you need to keep all the stored items neat and tidy. Below, we list 10 things you should probably not store under a bed.

The first things you should avoid storing under the bed are shoes, boots and other footwear that you wear outside of the home. However rarely they may be used and however much you can clean them, items of footwear always tranfer dirt and grim. It is best to use a shoe rack for your footwear.

For the same reason, it is best not to store suitcases and bags under the bed which, being used for travel, often get very dirty. For example, you could keep them in a closet together with your shoes or, if possible, in the cellar, attic or garage.

3. Clothes you wear frequently

If you decide to use the bed as a container for your clothes, make sure you only keep linen and seasonal clothing in it - ie. items which you won't be using for many months. The clothes and linen that we wear every day should be stored in a place that is easy to access and where they can be found easily. Unless your bed is equipped with pull-out drawers, it is better to use a wardrobe for storing frequently-worn clothes.

4. Fragile items

There are some valuable, delicate objects like porcelain tea sets, PCs, tablets, glass vases, etc which we may struggle to find a spot for. The temptation is store them under the bed - especially if they are objects that we use very rarely. In fact, these objects not only could break, but they could also be damaged when you attempt to move them.

5. Non-vacuum packed, bulky items

Bulky blankets, bedspreads and duvets, padded jackets and ski suits take up a lot of space if not vacuum packed. In addition to being awkward to store, these items take up a lot of storage space. Stored in wardrobe or under the bed, it is best to first vacuum pack them.

Documents and valuables should be kept in cabinets or drawers, so that they are more easily accessible when you need to get to them. Furthermore, according to security experts, thieves always look under the bed when robbing a house. It's best to hide these items elsewhere.

7. Heavy or irregularly shaped objects

Containers full of heavy objects can be awkward to move and doing so could ruin the tiles or parquet. Irregularly shaped objects also take up a lot of space, creating a cluttered appearance and blocking access.

8. Items you could forget about

The space under the bed seems like the ideal place to hide something, such as birthday or Christmas presents. Holiday decorations, gift wrap and bows, and other items you use rarely can also be stored under the bed. However, the risk is that you forget where you put these items and you'll waste a lot of time looking for them when you need them again. Make sure you won't forget what you've put under the bed!

9. Items not placed in a container

Storing multiple items under the bed without first putting them in a container creates a lot of clutter and will waste a lot of your time searching for what you need. It's best to buy some storage containers - perhaps equipped with wheels - to help you find what you need quickly and efficiently.

10. Nothing

According to some organization experts, storing items under the bed not only causes an accumulation of a lot of dust, but can also cause sleep disturbances. It would be best not to use this space at all and to find another spot for your objects -  perhaps a wardrobe, a closet, the cellar, the attic or a warehouse. If you really can't avoid doing so, try putting as few objects as possible under the bed.
