When the weather gets cold, the desire to spend more time at home increases, perhaps lying under the blankets. In winter, we find ourselves closing up the house, having dinner early and slipping under the covers with relish. But what happens if our home - the bedroom in particular - does not heat up quite how we would like it to? There are many possible causes for a cold bedroom: drafts coming in from the windows, how long we air the room, an old or inefficient heating system or lack of use during the day.

If your bedroom always seems too cold when you go to bed, here are some useful suggestions to deal with this. Finally, your winter nights will be warm and comfortable!

Changing the air in our homes is also essential in winter in order to promote health of all inhabitants and eliminate stale air which accumulates during the course of daily life. Equally important, however, is when this operation takes place: if you open all the windows for at least half an hour in the morning - when the sun's rays are still warm - your home will remain warmer than if you do this during the evening.

Shutters and blinds are also essential in insulating of our homes. In winter, it is best to open the shutters and blinds while the sun is shining and close them as soon as it gets dark, to prevent the cold from getting in.

3. Drafts

Another basic step to take if we want to ensure our bedrooms stay warm is to deal with any drafts. Drafts usually enter from old or damaged window fixtures, and you can eliminate them using fabric draft excluders; even old towels or blankets can serve this purpose. You can also buy transparent thermal insulating film for windows: this is very easy to apply and will allow you to significantly reduce the problem of drafts getting in.

4. Fabrics

The use of various types of fabrics is also effective in heating our rooms. For the bedroom, you can choose thick, thermal-insulating curtains and close them as soon as the goes down. Covering the floors with carpets and rugs is also a great way to ensure a room stays warm. Heavy fabrics are perfect for retaining the heat emanating from heaters, avoiding its rapid dispersion. As for the bed, use thick cotton or flannel sheets and  heavy blankets. If the bedspread is not sufficient, put blankets over the sheets: they will help you keep warm during the night.

5. Hot water bottle

Finally, to counteract winter cold, try using a hot water bottle. There are numerous types to chose from, even DIY ones can be used: traditional hot water bottles, cherry stone pillows, socks filled with hot salt or rice. Warm them up and put them in the bed just before retiring: they will spread a pleasant warmth to the blankets, avoiding you having to get under freezing cold sheets.

Your bedroom is already warmer and more welcoming, right?
