We all know how important it is to take care of the things we have at home, dealing with their cleaning, maintenance and, if necessary, replacement. Perhaps, however, we do not always realize the reasons why it is important to do so.

Sometimes, it seems like it's just a matter of habit. In reality, some objects, if not kept in good condition, can even become harmful to our well-being and health. In other cases, certain items simply cease to function or to work correctly.

Here are some examples, listed below:

Mattress and pillows are items you need to pay close attention to. Bacteria and mites often thrive here and can be very harmful to one's health - especially the skin and the respiratory system. They can also lose their shape and become unfit for resting on, also impacting general well-being. It is therefore best to periodically clean them and replace them when necessary.

Towels must be washed often to avoid them becoming havens for mold, germs and bacteria. And when they are worn out, it is best to replace them with new ones.

Unfortunately, sheets can also become a breeding ground for mites and bacteria if they are not changed often enough. I is best, therefore, to change and clean them frequently.

And what about glasses, cups and mugs? Washing them carefully immediately after each use is essential to prevent the growth and proliferation of germs that could have a negative effect on our health.

The classic mocha (or moka pot) for making coffee, if not washed regularly or replaced when it is worn out, can be harmful to our health (not to mention negatively affecting the flavor of the coffee). Apart from the pathogens that can accumulate in a mocha, the other dirt deposits can make the coffee really unpleasant to drink. Additionally, the gasket needs to be changed when it wears out and/or hardens. Cleaning of mochas is believed by many to be unnecessary, but this is simply not true.

The washing machine is another of those appliances which, if not cleaned and cared for properly, can turn into the exact opposite of what they were supposed to be. So, if there is an accumulation of dirt and limescale in the machine, this will inhibit the washing machine's function and performance, i.e. laundry will remain dirty.

Those who have carpets should always consider sanitizing them and eliminating dust from them frequently. Dust build-up can lead to allergies developing or respiratory system disorders (to which some people are especially predisposed).

Maintaining a well-organized and clutter-free wardrobe is essential to saving a lot of time and also to protecting your clothes. It is, therefore, advisable to periodically get rid of those clothes you don't wear for whatever reasons.

Finally, all the tea towels we use at home are a bit like our bathroom towels. For good hygiene, they should be washed often and replaced when they are worn out and no longer functional.

Do you take good care of the things you have at home?
