Have you ever cleaned the condensation drip tray of your freezer or fridge? Find out how to do this

Refrigerators and freezers are appliances that are continuously running in the home. They are expensive devices, which also require regular maintenance to work properly and not break down. We know we have to defrost them (sometimes even when they are frost-free models!), to keep them clean inside and out. We must also remember to remove all the dust and lint that accumulates in the back and near the condenser.

But how often do we remember to clean the tray, or basin, in which the condensation from the appliance is collected? Probably not often enough. Sometimes, you may notice dark water leaking out under the fridge, and this means we must intervene. Of course, it is best to be proactive and clean this tray every couple of months.

As a video from TikTok shows, it's an operation that doesn't take much time.

Determine where the drip tray is. It is usually placed behind the condenser ventilation grill, and sometimes it needs to be disassembled with the help of a screwdriver. Remove it carefully and proceed to wash it. To do this you will need:

  • A large basin, which can contain the tray
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • White vinegar
  • Powdered laundry detergent (it's best if it is an active oxygen stain remover type)
  • Water

The procedure:

  • Put the drip tray inside the basin.
  • Sprinkle the entire tray with baking soda - enough to cover the entire surface with a film.
  • Pour the white vinegar over the baking soda to trigger the chemical reaction.
  • When the reaction stops, add the washing powder.
  • Pour hot water in the basin until the tray is completely covered and stir for a bit.
  • Leave everything to soak for 10 minutes.
  • Empty the basin, rinse and dry the clean drip tray.
  • Reassemble the tray (if necessary), slot into its housing and close the grate.

You can see this method in action by clicking here: in about 15 minutes, you will have thoroughly cleaned the drip tray, and, perhaps while the tray is soaking, you can vacuum the dust, fluff and animal hair from the area where the drip tray is located. It is also a good time to clean the grill at the back of the frige.

Great work!
