Anyone who has pines, firs and other trees that produce cones, knows that they always involve a lot of work in terms of cleaning them up - but also that they are little treasures. In fact, they are a super versatile raw material - and at zero cost! - which can be used to create a myriad of imaginative, colorful and fun decorations for the house and the garden.

They can be painted, broken down into parts (i.e. the wooden "petals" they are made of), combined with other creative materials and made to look like colorful flowers, adorable little animals and more. It just takes the right idea and a collection of cones.

Make sure you prepare them well, washing them carefully, and then let your imagination run wild. Here are some ideas to draw inspiration from:

A flowery wreath, one that does not risk withering and dying: with pine cones, you can have brightly colored flowers virtually forever.

And the same goes for those instances when flowers are made from pine cones and are used to decorate a picture which is hung up at home, or maybe even given as a gift.

You can create pictures either by framing them, or by gluing the flowers made of pine cones onto a wooden panel of some kind.

You could also colorize the background with colored shapes under a composition of pine cones pieces, for emphasis.

Have ever thought that an inverted pine cone painted yellow - on the tips - has the appearance of a pineapple?

Those cones which are a bit narrower and longer, on the other hand, may resemble the clustered flowers of certain plants. And even here, you cango wild with colors, perhaps then mounting the cones on green sticks and putting them into a vase. Here are some flowers that you will never die!

And to emphasize the composition of flowers made with pine cones, you can also put green leaves in the vase, even fake ones, like those of the eucalyptus tree.

Or, you could use a pine cone to fashion some kind of bird, and then use it as a decoration for Christmas.
