Sometimes the idea of building an entire piece of furniture with a DIY project seems really unattainable: we think of having to deal with carpentry issues or having to weld and assemble metal frames, and then equipping ourselves with a thousand different tools. It is true that there are projects like this, but there are also those that are much more affordable for everyone.

For example, to make a desk, full of drawers and shaped to form an "L", three cheap shelves are enough. Read on to find out more:

You need pieces of furniture that are all of compatible size. In this project, open IKEA bookcases are used: two are wider, one narrower, but all are of the same height.

You start by placing them at the points where you want the support of the shelf to be: they will become the "legs" of the desk, so decide whether to arrange them all on one side of the room, for a very long table, or to create an "L" as in the case of  this example. The design shown here has the narrower shelf at the end remaining in the middle of the room.

We then proceed by connecting the three pieces of furniture with wooden boards of suitable dimensions, for length and width, which will be assembled by cutting, so that the upper edge is flush with the surface of the furniture. They will in fact be the reinforcement supports on which to rest the desk top.

At this point, all that is missing is the laying of the shelf, which will rest on the bookcases.

You can choose to make the desk wider, even adding a molding on some of the profiles. And then it will be just a question of filling the compartments of the libraries with baskets, boxes and also document holders, books and everything you need to keep handy.

You might as well go further and add drawers where you can. In short, the basic structure is the starting point, but then you can customize as you wish!

As you can see, there are those who use just one or two shelves, perhaps combined with a table with two legs, or simply equipped with various shelves and containers.

Would you like to furnish your home this way?
