Cleaning the bathroom is not always a quick and easy task and requires a good deal of elbow grease. And when you have to deal with a particularly dirty bathroom or with limescale deposits, the chore becomes much more difficult.

Among the many secrets known to clean the various components of the bathroom - especially those in ceramic and steel - are one you will read about here. One in particular is based on the use of a common product, easy to find and cheap: Marseille soap.

With a simple bar of soap (or flakes), you can make a multipurpose detergent mixture to be used one different materials and surfaces.

Below, are the quick and simple steps that will let you create a great cleaning solution:

  • Get a bar of Marseille soap or soap flakes. You will need about 1/4 of the bar in the first case, and four tablespoons if you prefer the flakes.
  • Dissolve the soap in a double boiler, turning it into a creamy paste.
  • Add the dissolved soap to about 1 liter of warm water, and mix well until the mixture is liquid and homogeneous.
  • If you want, you can add a spoonful of baking soda  to increase the cleaning and whitening power.
  • And if you want to make it really fragrant, add a few drops of essential oil. You can choose between eucalyptus, mint, lemon or tea tree - the choice is yours.

Once you have your Marseille soap-based all-purpose liquid cleaner ready, you can choose to use it in two ways:

  • If you pour it directly onto a sponge, rub it over the surfaces, leaving it to act for a while and then rinsing off.
  • If, on the other hand, you want to use a spray container, spray the liquid abundantly on the area to be treated and rub it, proceeding with the normal cleaning and rinsing steps.

This mixture, as mentioned, can be used for all ceramic parts, taps, showers, floors and even, for doors or other wooden objects.

If the dirt in some areas is particularly stubborn, you can integrate - where and when needed - a more abrasive compound based on salt, bicarbonate and water or, even better, vinegar. Where the dirt is hard to remove, pass this paste over the surface, scrubbing with an old toothbrush. Then let it act for a few hours and rinse off. Your bathroom will truly shine.
