When the upholstery of sofas and armchairs gets dirty, cleaning visible dirt may not be enough to eliminate bad smells which may emanate from the cushions, backrests or armrests.

This odor can be due to sweat, pets, smoking or even the humidity of the environment (to name just a few causes). Once the visible dirt has been removed and there is nothing else left to wash, what can we do if a bad smell persists? Especially when it comes to non-pull-out sofas (or armchairs), it becomes a difficult problem to solve, unless professional remedies are employed. But there are also some DIY tips that can make a difference, like one which was shared on TikTok. Read on to find out more:

A cleaning expert, who also works renovating the upholstery of furniture, has achieved fame on his TikTok account by revealing a method to deodorize furniture that always works well for him .

The TikTokker's name is Brandon, and in a video, he explains how to deodorize smelly sofas and airchairs. Here are the very easy steps to follow:

  • Sprinkle white vinegar (alcohol, wine or apple) on the pillow or cushion.
  • Enclose the pillow in a large bag, such as a garbage bag (even better if they are the ones using for vacuum packing, but this is not strictly necessary).
  • Create a vacuum in the bag with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
  • Leave the bag for 46 hours.
  • Take out the contents out of the bag and air-dry it thoroughly.

It is a very easy and non-strenuous method. The TikTokker states you can replace the white vinegar with your favorite fabric deodorant. You could also try DIY alternatives based on alcohol and essential oils; or just alcohol (pure, preferably food-grade, or an unflavored vodka), water and a drop of your favorite laundry softener.

If the traditional tip of using baking soda as a deodorizer, isn't for you, you might want to try this method!
