5 DIY methods to avoid mosquito bites

There is no summer when you don't have to arm yourself with every possible strategy to avoid being covered with mosquito bites every day. More or less all of us are victims of the bites of these annoying insects on an almost daily basis.

We can resort to traps, repellant sprays, as well as insecticides. We can use candles and coils that burn slowly, and we can also resort to trying some other homemade methods and some useful precautions, such as those we indicate below:

  • First of all, pay attention to stagnant water: we know that mosquitoes deposit their eggs in stagnant water, and so should be eliminated. Remember to clean out the gutters properly, do not leave water in plant post, in the children's pools, in the bowls of the pets or birdbaths for a long time (change it often). And wherever possible, avoid keeping any objects with concave surfaces outside where water can accumulate.
  • At home, help yourself by using fans: floor and table fans, above all, are most useful. Mosquitoes are not able to fly against the air current. So, while you cool off, make sure to point the fan towards the window, so that they do not enter from the outside.
  • Instead of burning mosquito coils, you can try camphor: while it burns for a bit inside a closed room (like incense), remain outside. Wait at least half an hour before entering the room again.

  • In addition to the repellents you can buy or those prepared at home, you can further help yourself by adding a few drops of one of the most effective essential oils in repelling mosquitoes. Make sure you are not allergic to their components, and then choose from lemon, eucalyptus oil, lavender, cinnamon, thyme, catmint (Nepeta Parnassica), lemongrass, or tea tree oil.
  • Essential oils should never be used neat, so dissolve a couple of drops in some carrier oil that you can use on your skin. There are some that are more effective against mosquitoes, such as that of Neem or soybeans.
  • If you prefer to buy a product, remember that the synthetic amino acid IR3535 is a useful ingredient in the composition of repellents, keeping mosquitoes away from our bodies up to a maximum of 8 hours from application.
