7 tips to remember to get soft, fragrant towels

One of the small daily pleasures is to wrap your body in a soft towel, perhaps after taking a bath or a shower. And the comfort that you feel when you dry your face on a soft fabric is a little extra luxury that never hurts. So, it is annoying when our towels come out of the wash, or off the clothes line, feeling rough and hard.

With some care, however, it is possible to get soft towels without any real effort. Here are some tips to remember:

  • Washing using vinegar instead of softener: the silicones present in many softeners nestle among the fibers and in the long run, do not allow water to penetrate properly and clean everything thoroughly during the wash cycles. For this reason, it is advisable to replace the softener with simple white vinegar.
Take note: doing this too frequently will damage the washing machine. It is best to do this only once in a while - about once every month and a half - to get rid of the residue that make the towels feel rough. And even then, you should wash them normally, and then do a quick cycle using only vinegar - no soap or fabric softener.
  • Baking soda: add 100 grams of baking soda to the normal amount of detergent used in the detergent dispenser. It will help to stretch the fibers and clean away excess chemicals and grime, especially when the towels have been in the laundry basket for a long time or in a gym bag.
  • It is best to wash towels by themselves (and with no other types of garments). Doing this, they will come out softer than if you wash them with other types of garments.
  • Shake out the towels vigorously before putting them in the washing machine, and again before placing them on the clothesline.
  • Not to overload the washing machine drum is another piece of advice you should never forget. When it is too full, the water and soap do not circulate well, so it does not clean or rinse out the towels properly.
  • Pay attention to the washing temperatures indicated on the labels. Not all material tolerate the high temperatures suggested for other garments.
  • Using the dryer: yes or no? It would be best to alternate. Although it is normal for towels to be placed in the dryer as soon as the washing cycle is finished, always using the dryer stresses the fabric faster. It is better, then, to also air dry the towels in filtered sunlight (and not exposed to direct, strong sunlight for long periods, as this will make the towels feel hard and rough).

Just a little more attention will give you lovely, soft towels!
