The kitchen oven hood performs an essential function because it sucks up and extracts the fumes and fat molecules that escape from the stove during cooking, but in order for it to work correctly, it is essential to keep it clean. Unfortunately, however, this is one of the appliances that tends to get dirty frequently and therefore, requires constant maintenance. The good news is that you don't necessarily need to buy special products to make it look like new again, and some simple natural remedies and products are sufficient, ranging from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, bicarb) to sodium percarbonate.

Not only these, but vinegar and lemon are also effective against the dirt that accumulates in the hood, and so are other simple but effective methods. Here is a selection of the best ones to remove any traces of grease and make it almost as good as new.

The first method we recommend you try is with sodium percarbonate, which has both degreasing and whitening power. You can buy this product in organic shops and use it to create a paste to be rubbed directly on the hood. Mix the percarbonate with hot water and spread the resulting paste directly on the hood, using a soft cloth. Once the cleaning operation is finished, all you have to do is wipe the hood down with a clean damp cloth to remove the paste residue.

The second method is using the more well tknown sodium bicarbonate (baking soda / bicarb). In this method, we advise you to immerse the hood filter in a container filled with boiling water and a few tablespoons of baking soda, leaving it to soak for at least half an hour. Clean it with a brush and rinse it off before installing it back into its housing.

Finally, the third method is using a mixture based on vinegar and lemon, which is particularly suitable for steel hoods (the most commonly found types in our homes). The mixture is prepared by mixing 1 glass of vinegar, 200 ml of water and the juice of 1 lemon. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it directly on the hood. Leave it on for a few minutes and wipe off with a sponge.

You just need to try out these natural methods and find the one that seems best suited to your needs. As you can see, they are all simple and cheap, but you will soon find out, they are also very effective.
