The world of cake design can hold huge surprises, and the most skilled pastry chefs are able to create desserts with such a realistic look (of something else), that it is hard to believe that they are edible sweets ... until you sink your knife into the cake.

There are several food artists who have managed to make themselves famous thanks to their skills in this field, and one of them is Ben Cullen - known on British TV and on social media as The Bakeking. This pastry chef manages to create cakes in the shape of almost any object - even buildings, regular (non-cake) food and famous people. Check out some of his creations below:

Here's a pair of sneakers which are ready to wear, and with laces included. The play of light on the various details makes them seem completely real.

Yet by plunging a knife into the sneakers uppers, we discover a very sweet soul (sole), of sponge cake and chocolate cream.

And what about this burger? The bread has all the folds of a real sandwich, as well as the color it takes on when toasted on the grill. Shiny in the right spots and with sesame seeds ... Not to mention the meat patty inside!

This too, however, is actually a cake!

Which of the two objects shown in the picture, in your opinion, is a cake? The glass with lots of bubbles in it or the bottle with a detailed label?

It's the bottle. This is a reinterpretation of the classical red velvet cake.

Not that Ben Cullen isn't capable of making cake look like liquids too. As in the case of this Guinness beer glass topped off with a creamy foam.

Here too, once sliced, a sweet, cakey heart is revealed.

You wouldn't want to eat a wooden log...

This pair of Nike Air Force trainers are actually a vanilla cake prepared by Ben Cullen to celebrate his company's 50th anniversary. The details are made of chocolate ganache and sugar paste.

There are even examples of cakes that have the features of famous, real or fictional characters. Here's the unmistakable Spider Man, for example!

This is a cake of (the miniature version of) the home this couple just bought. A very sweet idea to celebrate such an important step in life!
