In the world of fitness there is always some new challenge set to go viral thanks to social media, and this is also the case of a new cardio exercise known as by it's label: "12-3-30". It was invented by a young woman named Lauren Giraldo, who had suggested her personal routine to get back into shape initially on YouTube in 2019, and then again on TikTok in the fall of 2021.

It is a very simple workout, to be done only about three times a week, and which the girl describes as "a real turning point" (or rather, "a game changer"). Read on to find out what it is:

Why is the exercise routine given it's numerical acronym? Lauren explains this in the video: it has everything to do with how to use the treadmill.

  • 12 is the angle of the slope to be set on the treadmill, which must be set at an incline (like are you were walking up a hill).
  • 3 are the miles per hour (about 4.8 km / hr), that needs to be set as the walking speed for the treadmill carpet.
  • 30 is the number of minutes you need to walk for: the training lasts half an hour at a time.

Lauren Giraldo shows the results of following this routine herself on her TikTok account: a photo shows her before starting to follow the routine (which she repeats five times a week) and a more recent photo, where you can see her slimmer and more toned body. The young woman presents this as a convenient and feasible exercise for anyone who does not want to drag themselves to the gym daily for punishing workouts.

Movement, however, is also associated with a good diet: to obtain the change shown in the clip, the young woman follows a specific diet and counts calories. She gave examples of her typical diet dishes in her 2019 YouTube video.

It is worth pointing out that the young woman is a social media influencer. She is not a certified sports coach or a doctor: and what she shares is her own experience. Although the results she achieved are really promising and certainly by walking or running for half an hour several times a week is a universal health recommendation, it could be that to reach a certain weight, it is necessary to modify the training - and above all the diet - in a way more adapted to each individual's specific needs and condition.

Experts say this is a good start or a good alternative for anyone who doesn't have time to go out and walk in the fresh air for extended periods of time. Would you like to try this workout routine?
