Planters for your orchids: choose the one that suits you best

The almost sensual beauty of orchids never ceases to enchant people all over the world, and so they are among the most popular plants to grow at home almost everywhere in the world. There are infinite varieties, but in most cases they are epiphytic plants, i.e. those that naturally grow on trees, with aerial roots that do not sink into the ground. This means that they should not be treated like  any other plant when the time comes to choose where to position them: if they are in pots, for example, it is better that they are transparent containers and perhaps even perforated to avoid water stagnation and root rot.

And they can even be placed without pots, but in planters made with other materials - or you can even hang them up using the kokedama technique. Take a look at a few ideas and suggestions below:

When we buy orchids, they are often found in transparent plastic pots: these are useful and they can be easily pierced to let the roots breathe ... But we could also place the orchid in a glass or plexiglass container and without filling it too much with suitable soil (soil made from pieces of bark which are very coarse and light), so that the plant does not risk its roots rotting.

In a similar way, large glass jars can be reused: it is good if they have a wide mouth, to better manage the plant. Obviously, in all these cases where containers do not have drainage holes, you will need to be even more careful not to overdo the watering.

Another very attractive idea for glass vases: fill them first with decorative stones and then with a little soil for orchids, before placing the roots of the plant on top of them. Also, be careful not to crush the roots with the stones themselves.

Instead of a perforated plastic vase ... a metal one: some convert a steel cylindrical cutlery strainer into an orchid vase, which can be placed in a glass bowl to avoid unwanted water leaks.

Since orchids are also suitable for hydroculture, they also allow you to take advantage of glass vases and bottles and similar containers in general for their cultivation at home.

A hanging planter, similar to a kokedama (and there are those who use these for their orchids!), but simpler to make than a kokedama. Spherical supports are used that are also good for many other plants, and a kind of bowl is created by coating the lower hemisphere with coconut fibre or other similar natural materials. Into these, you can put some soil for your orchid.

A stunning arrangement of orchids and exotic plants in a wooden tray - it makes a stunning centerpiece!

And why not use an old block of roots or some other piece of a trunk with an attractive shape? You could also decorate it with moss or similar ground cover plants.

How do you prefer to keep your orchids indoors?
