Wooden furniture, whether matte, satin or glossy, always looks better when it is not covered by a film of dust: the grain of the wood is so fascinating that it deserves not to be tarnished by any stain. And besides the dust and dirt, sometimes it's water that creates problems.

Just think of when we leave a wet object on a wooden surface, without using protection (coasters) or drying the ring of water or humidity that is created on the wood immediately. It doesn't take much for that small amount of water to leave whitish traces, which are no more than limescale stains. If the water in the house is hard, this incident is even more frequently encountered. So how can one remove these water stains and restore the wood to its original splendor? There are a few methods to try, some of which are listed below;

  • Mayonnaise (mayo): it is strange to think of spreading such a greasy product on the wood, but in fact the oil with which the emulsion is created at the base of this famous condiment is a good remedy to erase the traces of limescale. To proceed, take some absorbent kitchen paper, or even a cotton pad (or a soft cloth) and a small amount of mayonnaise: best not to overdo it, otherwise you will end up clogging the furniture with grease. Rub until the limescale mark is erased and the wood absorbs the bulk of the mayonnaise. Alternatively, you can also wipe very lightly and leave the paper towel on the area for a while, even overnight. After this period of time, remove all the excess with more paper and rub with a soft dry cloth to polish the wood.
  • You can also do the same (as the mayo method) using petroleum jelly (vaseline), preferably with a soft cloth rather than paper.
  • Steel wool and lemon oil: This is another eye-opening remedy, as it seems it would be too abrasive. But using finer-meshed steel wool will generally not damage the wood. But be careful on furniture with a very glossy finish: it is better to try the method first on a hidden corner in order to avoid any nasty surprises. Proceed as follows: pour a few drops of lemon oil on the wood and then rub with the steel wool, following the direction of the grain of the wood, and only in the area of the water stain.
  • Olive oil and white vinegar: mix the two ingredients in equal parts in a small bowl (one or two tablespoons of each is really enough), then pass the product over the stain with the help of a soft cloth until the stain is erased .

They are very simple remedies and a little less well known than some others. What are your foolproof tips in these cases?
