Corn starch is a very fine powder, and is naturally abrasive - even if it is a less "aggressive" product than sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Furthermore, it is insoluble, which means that it does not dissolve completely in water, so using it in combination with water allows it to maintain its abrasive capacity. That's why it can become the perfect solution for routine, light cleaning, as it can clean many different surfaces in a very gentle manner.

Furthermore, corn starch absorbs moisture, grease and odors; as for its acidity, it is neither particularly alkaline nor acidic, which means that it can be mixed with many other substances without causing any problems.

How do you use cornstarch for cleaning?

  • Mix one part of water with 2 parts of cornstarch to make a paste.
  • With a soft sponge, or even a soft cloth, spread the paste on the areas to be cleaned.
  • Scrub well and then rinse off with hot water.

You can also use this remedy on kitchen countertops.

As for pots or pans in which there are burnt food residue, you can sprinkle the bottoms with corn starch and then rub it in with the help of a sponge. Or try the paste described above on these objects as well.

If, on the other hand, you want to use  corn starch to clean a glass shower door, fill a spray bottle with three parts of water and one of corn starch, shake well and spray on the door, then rub on the glass surface with a cloth. Once done, rinse off with cold water. Remember to always shake the spray bottle very well, as starch does not dissolve well and tends to settle on the bottom of the container.
