When we need to set the table for an important occasion, we like to show off our best tableware, including the cutlery. And even if the cutlery is clean, sometimes some it still has a slight patina / film of tarnish that makes it opaque. Depending on whether they are made of precious metals or stainless steel, different methods can be used to clean cutlery, and in this article we will show you a number of household tips useful for cleaning the second type of cutlery: that is, stainless steel cutlery.

Even stainless steel cutlery, in fact, needs to be thoroughly cleaned from time to time to return it to its top condition, and to do this you can use some simple DIY tips.

If you want to use the dishwasher to clean your stainless steel cutlery, then make sure you get the best results by using aluminum foil (tinfoil). It is simply a matter of inserting a ball of kitchen aluminum into the cutlery basket before closing the dishwasher and starting a wash cycle. At the end of the program, the metal knives, forks and spoons will shine like new! How is it possible?

In reality, this is due to the chemical reaction between the aluminum and the bicarbonate contained in most of the tablets used in this type of household appliance these days. In fact, at very high temperatures (and the dishwasher's water certainly reaches the necessary temperature levels), the bicarbonate contained in many tablets reacts with the aluminum and the result is the removal of many stains and tarnish from the metal of the cutlery.

  • You can also use bicarbonate in a manual procedure: boil some water in a saucepan and then add in a few tablespoons of baking soda. When the water is cold, put the cutlery in it and leave it for half an hour. Then rinse off and dry immediately.
  • In a similar way, white vinegar can clean the steel. Mixed with the water in equal parts.
  • If you have a little more time, fill a pot with hot water, put 3 tablespoons of baking soda into it and then immerse the cutlery in the solution, leaving it to act overnight. Then all you need to do is rinse off and dry as usual.
  • Otherwise create a paste of vinegar and cooking salt and rub it over the cutlery with a dish sponge, then rinse off and dry immediately.

What's your favorite method of getting your stainless steel cutlery to shine like new?
