A garden under the stairs: be inspired by these beautiful, indoor green enclaves

Plants should be considered a staple in any home. They soften the environment, help us to breathe healthier air and having them at home and taking care of them can be truly therapeutic. But where best to place them? In addition to window sills or shelves near the windows that let in enough natural light, there are also other points of the house to consider, such as the stairwell.

In fact, if the stairs in the house are structured in such a way as to be quite open and leave space under the incline, and above all, there are glass walls, windows or skylights that let in light from the outside, then this space (that is often difficult to furnish) can become the most fascinating areas of all by hosting a real, indoor garden.

As long as there is sufficient light, you can place all your vases under the stairs.

Or, take advantage of it to deploy a large and attractive bookcase.

The idea of using two different types of crushed stone to decorate an indoor flowerbed is also very attractive. And then skilfully positioned spotlights can be installed to illumnate the ground and the various plants in a scenographic way.

A flowerbed could be the green space that divides the living room from the staircase.

A minature garden under the staircase also looks good alongside wooden floors, perhaps laid on one side only.

And if you don't like the idea of just leaving the backing wall empty, you can consider cladding it in some way, even using bamboo or straw panels.

Obviously, it is essential to choose the right type of plants that you will arrange in these points: these areas are more suitable for those that really require less intensive care, such as zamioculcas.

Would you like to include some prominent statues among the plants (like a Buddha)? It is also nice, if the architecture of the house allows it, to have long light fittings descending into the stairwell. And they might even be lights that help plants grow when there is little natural light.

There are many possibilities to be inspired by and you can realize your indoor garden dreams.

What if the garden under the stairs were vertical? By equipping yourself with the right lights (for illumination and to encourage plant growth), you can grow green walls!

You could also consider closing the space under the staircase with glass walls, almost as if the transparent walls are an extension of the railings that then encloses the garden below in a sort of display case.

Would you like to have a garden under the stairs in your home?
