Jewelry to clean? Make a DIY product to get them to shine like new again!

There is jewelry that we wear very often, such as favored bracelets, rings and necklaces that we care most about and that are also suitable for a more casual look in everyday life. As a result, these pieces are always in contact with our skin, the sebum (our natural oils), and our sweat. If we then also consider possible other sources of occasional dirt, or even just the dust in the air and the soaps we use every day, it is normal for jewels to lose their original splendor over time, becoming dull and tarnished.

However, if they are made or plated with precious metals, it is easier to make them shine again like they were when they were new. Below, we describe some products that you can prepare for stress-free cleaning of jewelry at home using common household ingredients.

In the case of jewelry made of metal other than gold, you will need:

  • A glass jar
  • 100 ml of witch hazel (or witch hazel hydrolate)
  • Alternatively (to witch hazel), use white vinegar
  • 30 grams of baking soda
  • An old toothbrush
  • (optional) 3-5 drops of tea tree essential oil

How to proceed:

  • Put the jewelry in the jar
  • Add the witch hazel hydrolate or white vinegar until the pieces are covered (if you need to use more solution, remember to increase the measurements given above proportionally).
  • Pour in the drops of tea tree essential oil and swirl the jar to mix.
  • Leave the jewels immersed for several hours (or even overnight), then remove them without drying them off.
  • Sprinkle them with baking soda and scrub them gently with the toothbrush.
  • Rinse off and immediately use a soft cloth to dry then thoroughly.

In the case of gold jewelry (which does not have any precious gems inset), you can proceed as follows:

  • Fill a bowl with hot water and pour in a couple of tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of dish washing detergent.
  • Immerse the jewelry and leave it in the water for a few minutes.
  • Scrub the various pieces one by one with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Rinse off and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

You can always finish this procedure by using proper velvet jewelry cloth to polish the dry jewelry.
