Remove the dirt from a detergent drawer with this simple DIY method

When we do the laundry we like it to come out of the washing machine clean and fragrant, but it is not always possible to avoid bad smells getting into the fabrics. Among the various causes that lead to this phenomenon, there is poor cleaning of the appliance. Typically here we are referring to the cleaning the door seals or the drum, and maybe we also need to check the condition of the filter. But there is also another element that we must remember to check out in the right way, and that is the dispensing tray into which we pour the detergents.

The dispensing tray (also known as the "detergent drawer") is frequently in contact with various different soaps and detergents, liquid and powdered, and although these are discharged into the piping system at each washing cycle, some residue always remains. This is particularly the case in the washing machine tub - especially in the difficult to reach places with a sponge or soft cloth. It is here then, that over time these areas become stained and produce mold, which is highly unhygienic as well as annoying to see. And it is therefore also necessary to make an occasional thorough cleaning of the detergent drawer as well and not just the tub alone. Read on to find out how to deal with this task:

What equipment will be needed:

  • A basin, or a similar-sized bowl;
  • Alternative cleaning agents to chose from: white vinegar, baking soda, Marseille soap or dish soap;
  • Optional: lemon juice;
  • A toothbrush;
  • A sponge;
  • A microfiber cloth.

How to proceed

  • Fill the basin or bowl with hot water, just enough to cover the detergent drawer;
  • Pour the cleaning products of your choice into the water:
    If you use vinegar, you will need 250 ml;
    If you use baking soda, you will have to dissolve it by mixing 3 tablespoons into the water;
    If using Marseille soap, you will use 2 tablespoons (flakes or liquid), stirring until dissolved;
    If you use dish soap instead, use a tablespoon or a tablespoon and a half.
  • Following the manufacturer's instructions, remove the entire detergent drawer. In general, it is really simple to take it out gently, paying attention to any lids of the individual compartments of which it is composed;
  • If you want, you can pour the juice of one lemon all over the drawer;
  • Immerse the drawer in hot water with vinegar / baking soda / soap and let it soak for half an hour;
  • After half an hour, get the sponge and an old toothbrush and use them to remove all the dirt that you have softened in the steps above;
  • Rinse well and dry immediately with the microfibre cloth;
  • Make sure the drawer is clean and dry and put it back in its housing.

A periodic maintenance of this kind, combined with the appropriate care of the other parts of the washing machine, will make your appliance last a long time and, above all, it guarantees near-perfect laundry every time!
