Rice flour is a commonly used ingredient in many oriental beauty products, and often used in home-made treatments as well. Rice, in fact, contains ferulic acid, vitamin B10 and phytates which, in the world of skincare, are used to exfoliate the skin, brighten it and protect it from damage caused by ultraviolet rays. It must be emphasized that in those industrial products, these ingredients are present in higher concentrations than those found in simple rice flour, or even in the rice itself.

So when preparing a face mask it is still good to add some other natural ingredients that makes it more nourishing. It is also advisable to use brown rice flour.

The procedure for preparing a face mask with brown rice flour is very simple. The necessary ingredients are:

  • 5 tablespoons of brown rice flour
  • 3 tablespoons of powdered milk
  • 1 tablespoon of EVO olive oil or sweet almond oil (do not use this if you have very oily skin)
  • Rose water (you will only need a little - a few tablespoons)

How to proceed

  • Mix the rice flour with the powdered milk
  • Add the oil
  • Add the rose water slowly, until you have a sticky and thick paste
  • Spread the preparation on the face, in an even layer
  • Leave on for 15 minutes
  • Wet your fingers to massage the mask onto the skin, so as to gently exfoliate the face
  • Take a clean cotton towel or cloth, wet it and use it to remove the paste from your face
  • Rinse your face with warm water to remove any residue

It is a very delicate mask, which you can use once or twice a week.

It is also possible to use the rice itself: it is always better if it is wholemeal, and it will take a little longer. You will have to soak the rice for 3 or 4 hours, then drain away the milky water that will have been produced. Then, repeat this for 3 times and drain the water off each time. By the third time, the water you throw away will be transparent and the rice is ready to cook (boiled or better still steamed). The rice is ready when it takes on a sticky consistency, and then it will be mashed or blended to reduce it to cream. Once cool, you can add the other ingredients listed above to achieve a blend that you can apply to your face.

Have you ever tried such a mask?
