We like all the rooms in our homes to be pleasantly scented, and the bathroom in particular. Attending to your personal hygiene in a "smelly" bathroom is not something any of us want. But sometime, our bathrooms are not in tip-top condition. So what can be done about this? Well keep reading to find out how to banish unpleasant odors from your bathroom:

Sometimes, we forget that it is certain commonly-used objects that generate unpleasant smells. Other times, however, the problem lies in forgetting to do something vital. Here's what you can do daily to avoid unpleasant odors developing in your bathroom:

  • Pay attention to the towels: if you have the habit of leaving wet towels or bathrobes in the bathroom, stop doing this. Hang up wet towels and bathrobes to dry on the clothesline or clothes horse, away from the bathroom. Once these items are dry, they can be put back in the bathroom.
  • Using towels for too long is also to be avoided - and not only for the unpleasant odors that they inevitably end up generating, but also for your personal hygiene. The face towels should be changed every day, while the others should be changed at least once a week.
  • Always provide ventilation: you need to ventilate the bathroom after taking a shower or bath, even if you have fans to help with this. Open any doors and windows to do this. And even if the bathroom is not used regularly (like a guest bathroom, for example), you should ventilate it for 20-30 minutes a day.
  • Don't forget to use moisture-absorbing tools/devices. Unpleasant smells could be due to the stagnation of humidity. There are devices you can purchase to dehumidify your bathroom (most of which are electrical devices). But you can also use hydrophilic crystals, which last a long time. And, of course, there are a myriad of DIY remedies you can resort to (mostly based on salt, sodium bicarbonate, baking soda or charcoal).
  • Throw away garbage regularly. Since it doesn't fill up as quickly as the rubbish elsewhere, sometimes you may forget to empty the bathroom trash cans. Empty the bathroom trash cans regularly and, once every week or two, it is a good idea to remember to wash out these trash cans.

Here are a few extra tips that can help you keep your bathroom smelling pleasant:

  • Soap bars: in addition to being eco-friendly, solid soap bars are very fragrant objects. If you use smaller soap bars, they won't lose their perfume too quickly. But take note: soap bars must not "stagnate" in water in their holders/soap dishes. Choose soap dishes that ensure that the water drains away properly, keeping the soap dry.
  • Fabric softeners: Fabric softeners can help in two ways. 1) you can pour a small amount of softener into the toilet's cistern which will then dispense a pleasant smell with each flush; 2) you can dilute a level teaspoon (or even less) of softener in a spray bottle filled of water (preferably distilled), and use this as a DIY deodorizing spray on the curtains, or even on the towels hanging up in the bathroom. Use sparingly and do not soak any items with this spray.

Enjoy your pleasantly-perfumed bathroom!
