Useful in the bathroom, and not just for shaving: the benefits of shaving cream as a cleaning product

Invented to reduce irritation and friction whilst shaving, shaving foam/cream is a very versatile product that can be used for a lot more than just shaving.

Keeping the home - and especially the bathroom - spic and span is important for maintaining good hygiene levels. Numerous household products can be used to this end: white vinegar, citric acid, bicarbonate and essential oils top the list. And shaving cream can also be added to range of useful cleaning products.

That said, let's check out how shaving cream can be used for alternative purposes:

How annoying is it to get out of the shower and have to wait for the fog on the mirror to clear? Thanks to shaving cream, you can avoid this inconvenience and clean the mirror: apply shaving cream directly to the surface of the mirror and then wipe off with a clean, dry cloth. Your mirror will now be clean and fog-proof.

The shower cubicle is vulnerable to limescale and soap residue build-up which makes it look shabby and allows germs and mold to grow. Shaving cream is not only useful for removing this type of dirt, but can also leave a protective layer on the surfaces (like with the above-mentioned mirror cleaning).

Cover all the surfaces of the shower cubicle with an even layer of shaving cream and leave it to act for a few minutes. Scrub off with a sponge or soft brush, then rinse thoroughly with plenty of warm water. Complete this cleaning by drying off with a dry, clean cloth or using a silicone-edged squeegee.

Like the shower, stainless steel faucets are also vulnerable to limescale and soap residue and can become dull-looking over time. All-natural products such as citric acid or vinegar - being weakly acidic - could damage the faucets, but shaving cream can easily solve this problem. Simply apply a small amount onto a clean, dry cloth and rub the faucets to make them clean and shiny again.

4. Anti-mold

Due to the high humidity levels in a bathroom, mold can easily appear, especially on the grouting, on the rubber or silicone seals and on the shower curtain. To remove this mold, mix bleach and shaving cream together in equal parts, apply to the problem areas with a teaspoon and leave to act overnight. In the morning, rinse off then sanitize using hydrogen peroxide (or a solution of water and vinegar).

5. Cleaning the toilet

Cleaning the toilet is the most important chore to do in the bathroom, but commercial toilet cleaners can easily damage surfaces and seals. All-natural products can be used for this chore: baking soda for stains, citric acid for limescale and hydrogen peroxide as an anti-microbial. Shaving cream can also be used to do this cleaning and will also help to eliminate unpleasant odors. Apply the foam in a uniform layer over the entire surface of the toilet, both internally and externally, and taking care to get into "hidden" areas where mold and germs can lurk. Leave to act for a few minutes, then clean the outside of the toilet with a sponge and the inside with the toilet brush.

As mentioned above, shaving foam is useful for removing unpleasant odors in the bathroom. When used to clean all the surfaces described above, shaving cream can get the job done and help to eliminate unpleasant odors.

What other alternative uses for shaving foam do you know of?
